Nora in Australia
August 18 ...
No logging on in Melbourne. Busy signals.
Did my gigs. But best of all, between times a one
hour shopping window!!! TV station was right in a
shopping district. But first, a little Aussie
TV.
I get up to the one waiting area, with makeup and
such, and there are three women with enormous
beehives. I mean enormous. A blonde, a brunette and
a redhead. Huge hair with long ponytails. Pink
shirts with silver fringe. These are the Fabulous
Singlettes. Pretty cool. Everyone gets made up and
they put on the bottom half of the pink
deal--little skirts, then pink gloves. While I'm
getting done they use the mirror in the makeup room
to rehearse. They do "Will You Still Love Me
Tomorrow," a Capella, gorgeous harmony, little hand
movements and jiggles. They are fabulous.
God, I love show business. LOL.
It's a very nice little moment for me, sitting
there getting my hair smoothed out and watching
them put the polish on their act.
I hit the shops with Renya--pronounced Renee, and
buy a nifty black linen shirt and slim trousers in
one shop, a great loden green turtleneck and a
white linen tank in another, and the most fabulous
black silk jacket and leggings in the third. The
jacket is pleated all over, narrow, knife edged
pleats and simply fabulous. Double breasted, long,
looks incredible and doesn't wrinkle. I am very
happy, Renya is much impressed with my speed and
decisiveness. LOL
Back for another radio then the lunch. Lovely
little event, many devoted readers. They laugh at
my jokes, ask many questions and I sign
books--those they buy and those they've brought.
They put these deal on very well, elegant but not
formal, again lots of wine, which I only sampled
unfortunately.
One more radio--and she hits me straight off with
the JD business. Then onto the opening of the first
romance bookstore in Aussie.
This is a perfectly lovely, charming little place.
I've got a crowd waiting which is nice, and one of
the owners gives me a glass of champagne. They get
their books from the US so they don't have the lag
time that's such a problem here. A nice selection
of books, and wonderful little gifts. Since I left
my presents for the Japanese at home, I fix this
here with pretty little silver frames and purse
mirrors. Much better presents then I'd bought
originally anyhow.
If they had this shop near me, I'd shop there all
the time for pretties. This place is bound to be a
huge hit.
We ride in a taxi van to the airport. We are loaded
with stuff now and intend to ship a full bag home
tomorrow or the day after. Renya is relaxed around
us now and we have a fun ride into the airport,
offload and hit the lounge where she gets me a
glass of champagne and I take my shoes off.
Ahhhhhh.
Adelaide, for reasons that escape me is a half an
hour time difference from the east coast. Very
confusing. But the hotel is lovely. A separate
parlor here which makes it easier for us. There's
also a casino attached but I'm too tired to think
about it tonight.
Just ordered up some food, and though I have to get
up miserably early to call Amy and talk to her and
the lawyer, tomorrow is not so hectic or busy. Some
press and a lunch with some local authors. Renya
thinks I'll be done by mid afternoon and wants to
do a nice dinner off campus tomorrow night. I can
wear my new jacket. <g>
I liked Melbourne--or what I saw of it. Very
cosmopolitan. Lots of sidewalk cafes and little
boutiques. But it was cold and gray most of the
day, which I'm told is typical there.
