Nora's England/Ireland Travels 2002
Galway, June 14, 2002
Two gorgeously restored cars from the Orient Express are available to us here for dining. Just a fabulous experience to sit in the high-backed cushy seats, listening to old French music and have a drink while the rain drips down the window beside you. A top-notch staff looks after you without hovering. We had a fabulous meal--I'm going to have to work out like a maniac when I get home.
The whole thing was pretty grand, all the rich colors and fabrics, the pretty framed posters, the light, even the rain. This would definitely have been the way to travel back in the day.
Toward the end of the meal, BW spots a snail on the wide sidewalk beside the car. While I watch he seems to just be sitting there in his pretty shell, but I begin to see he's making progress at--haha--a snail's pace. It must've taken him a good half hour to cross the pavement, and where he was going, I can't say. Behind him was a pretty garden, covered with blooming vinca and spirea and other tempting treats, but apparently these guys wander around. Our server told us they watch the snail races late in the evening, and indeed we saw several others out and about on the way back to our room. BW had to step very carefully to avoid tragedy.
We came back and laze around in the parlor by the fire before turning in.
Though there was, briefly, the sight of blue in the sky this morning, it's already turned. I can hear the wind whipping and it's gone gray. BW's down to breakfast with the guide book, and we'll decide what we want to venture out to see. Plan is to end up in Galway City later in the day for some shopping, some dinner, and some pubbing.
